I stayed at the Yoho (hostel) this past wnkeeed, and it was pretty nice. I think it's one of two hostel choices in the city, and the other one requires you to have a membership card or they charge you more. A few minutes from the train station, a few more minutes from the old town, pretty close to Mirabell Palace.I can't help you with Salzburg to Vienna tickets, but a Bayern ticket covers Salzburg to Munich 26 euros for a partner ticket (up to 5 people + free use of the Munich transportation system for a day). There might be something similar to that in Austria? I got my ticket at the English-speaking info desk at the Munich rail station.
