The patents are some times reerfred to as monopolies but that is not always true. In economics a monopoly (Greek monos (one) + polein (to sell)) is defined as a market situation where there is only one provider of a product or service. In other words monopoly is the exclusive control of a commodity or service in a given market' held by force or by virtue of grant from the sovereign.
